Expert assessment, treatment and rehabilitation from our Chartered Physiotherapists in Gorey.

Calf Injury Treatment in Gorey

A calf strain, often referred to as a pulled calf muscle, is a common injury in both sport and everyday activity. It typically occurs during sprinting, pushing off quickly, sudden acceleration, or jumping and changing direction. Calf injuries are frequently seen in runners, GAA and soccer players, and gym-based athletes. See also our Sports Injuries and Running Injuries pages.

What Is a Calf Strain?

A calf strain occurs when one of the calf muscles is overstretched or torn. The calf is made up of two main muscles – the gastrocnemius (the larger, more powerful muscle) and the soleus (a deeper muscle, important for endurance). Together they push you forward when walking or running, absorb load and control ankle and knee function. Calf strains range from mild tightness to more significant tears.

Symptoms of a Calf Injury

  • Sudden pain in the back of the lower leg
  • Tightness or a cramping sensation
  • Pain when walking, running or pushing off
  • Tenderness in the muscle
  • Difficulty with higher-speed activities

Why Calf Injuries Occur

Calf strains often occur due to sudden increases in training load, fatigue, high-speed running, inadequate warm-up or a previous calf injury. In runners, they are often related to changes in training volume or intensity.

Physiotherapy Treatment for Calf Strain

  • Early stage – reduce pain and irritation, modify activity and maintain gentle movement.
  • Strength phase – progressive calf strengthening, improving load tolerance and restoring movement patterns.
  • Return to sport phase – running progression, plyometric exercises (jumping and landing) and sport-specific drills.

Why Calf Injuries Keep Coming Back

Calf strains have a high recurrence rate, particularly if rehabilitation is incomplete. Common reasons include returning to activity too early, insufficient strength, poor load management and underlying weakness or imbalance.

We use objective strength testing to identify deficits, track progress and guide your return to running or sport safely.

Rehabilitation Classes for Calf Injuries

Our small group rehabilitation classes, limited to four participants, help you build calf strength and endurance, improve movement control and prepare for return to running or sport. Classes cost €140 for four one-hour sessions.
