Clicking Jaw

Clicking or Popping in the Jaw

Hearing a clicking or popping sound when opening or closing your mouth is a common symptom of a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. The temporomandibular joint connects your jawbone to your skull and allows smooth movement when talking, chewing, and yawning.

A clicking sound often occurs when the small cartilage disc inside the joint moves slightly out of its normal position during jaw movement. While this can sound alarming, it is not always a sign of a serious problem.

Common Symptoms

People experiencing a clicking jaw may also notice:

  • Clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing the mouth
  • Jaw stiffness
  • Pain while chewing
  • Difficulty opening the mouth fully
  • Jaw fatigue after talking or eating
  • Tenderness around the jaw joint

Is a Clicking Jaw Serious?

In many cases, a clicking jaw is not a cause for concern, especially if there is no pain or restriction in movement.

However, if the clicking is accompanied by pain, stiffness, locking, or difficulty opening the mouth, it may indicate irritation or dysfunction within the jaw joint. Early assessment and treatment can often prevent symptoms from becoming more persistent.

How Physiotherapy Can Help

Physiotherapy aims to restore normal jaw movement, reduce muscle tension, and improve the function of the temporomandibular joint.

Your treatment plan may include:

  • TMJ mobilisation techniques
  • Manual therapy to relax tight jaw muscles
  • Posture assessment and correction
  • Jaw control and coordination exercises
  • Advice on reducing unnecessary jaw strain

When Should You Seek Treatment?

You should consider seeing a physiotherapist if you experience:

  • Persistent jaw clicking with pain
  • Difficulty opening or closing your mouth
  • Jaw locking episodes
  • Pain when chewing
  • Frequent headaches associated with jaw tension
  • Ongoing jaw stiffness

Early treatment often leads to faster recovery and helps reduce the likelihood of long-term joint problems.
