Orthotics

orthotics2Orthotics are devices that are placed in your shoes, boots or runners. They correct abnormal biomechanics that can cause stress, strain and injury. When you walk the first point of contact with the ground is your feet. If the foot rolls too far one way or the other, this causes a chain reaction up your lower limb, into your hip and into your lower back. This chain reaction can cause the body to compensate for the misalignment which can be the cause of pain in any area of the lower limb and back.

The most effective treatment method for this type of problem is a custom orthotic. A custom orthotic is made solely for you, it has the exact degree of correction you require and is moulded to your foot shape so they are very comfortable to wear. They work by realigning and aiding the foot to restore normal foot movement. Depending on your condition a custom orthotic may orthoticsnot always be required. Very often a prefabricated insole maybe all that is needed and these are a much cheaper option. We will be able to advise you which is the best option for your condition based on our biomechanical assessment.

As well as providing you with orthotic devices we will always give you advice on your condition and provide you with exercises to do to strengthen the muscles that have become weakened as a result of this compensation and also some flexibility exercises that are a big help in aiding the effectiveness of any orthotic. They help get you pain free quicker and keep you that way.

orthotics3How are orthotics made?

First, we will perform a detailed biomechanical examination. This will involve an examination of muscle length and function. We measure the angles of the foot and shin and examine you walking and perhaps running. We may also use slow motion video analysis for precise diagnosis of any faulty biomechanical issues.

From this a prescription with the corrections required is formed. This is coupled with a cast impression of your foot. This captures the shape of your foot and helps to match the arch profile to your foot. Your custom made orthotic is then made in a lab using the directions given by our prescription. There are over 50 different types of styles of orthotic for different conditions and different types of footwear. We will chose the best one for you and tailor it to your needs. This ensures you get the most effective treatment possible.

How do I know if I need an orthotic?

Orthotics may be suitable if your condition is chronic or developed slowly over time while walking or standing a lot.

Below is a list of conditions that are caused by poor biomechanics and respond well to orthotics.

  • orthotics4Shin splints
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Patellar Femoral pain
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Metatarsalgia
  • Foot pain
  • Knee pain
  • Leg pain
  • Back pain
  • Muscle tightness soreness or fatigue
  • Bunions calluses and corns

Why do I need orthotics?

If your foot is misaligned this can lead to increased stress and strain on the structures above it. Wear and tear is more prominent due to the extra demand placed upon it and this excess strain can delay a healing response.

Orthotics will help to rebalance any misalignment in your feet, off-load stressed areas and give better functional support to the structures above.

If you think you may need orthotics or even if you are unsure please contact the clinic. We would be delighted to help or answer any questions.
